Mouth Organ Tune "Jaanewalon Zara, Mudke Dekho Mujhe (Film : Dosti of 1964) played by me.
(Author’s Note : Please CLICK above PLAY button to start playing Mouth Organ Tune played by me on my Mouth Organ. Tune is for the song “Jaanewalon Zara, Mudke Dekho Muje” from the Film : Dosti of 1964. This song is based on Raga Pahadi and was brilliantly sung by Rafi Saab under the music direction of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. In original song in the interlude, Mouth Organ was played by Maestro R.D.Burman)
“Jaanewalon Zara, Mudke Dekho Mujhe” evokes lots of emotions to the listener. Touchy lyrics were penned by Great Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. Most importantly, this song was brilliantly rendered by Melody King Mohd. Rafi Saab and was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the Film : Dosti of 1964.
In fact, all songs of Dosti were very melodious and were brilliantly composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. In fact, the music was so good that Laxmikant Pyarelal won the most coveted Filmfare Award for Best Music for 1964 against the stiff competition from the Film : Sangam composed by Shankar-Jaikishen and another Film :Woh Kaun Thi composed by Madan Mohan. All 3 films were nominated for the year 1964 for the Best Music and finally “Dosti” music edged out to win Filmfare award beating both Shankar-Jaikishen and Madan Mohan. It was a shocker to Shankar-Jaikishen. Laxmikant-Pyarelal won their first Filmfare award for Best Music and they deserved it.
For playing Mouth Organ in the interlude of the song “Jaanewalon Zara”, Laxmikant-Pyarelal invited R. D. Burman who did full justice to the song by playing very beautifully his most favorite instrument that is Mouth Organ. R.D.Burman also played Mouth Organ in few other songs of Dosti. R.D.Burman came to play only because of his friendship with Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Dosti which was released in 1964 was directed by Satyen Bose and was produced by famous producer Tarachand Barjatya of Rajshree Films. Film did not have any famous heroes of the time. It was a story focussed on the friendship between two boys, one blind (singer) and one crippled (Mouth Organ Player). While both boys realize that they are lonely in this world and they had no choice other than to help each other in order to survive in this cruel world. Thus the true bond of their friendship surfaces. While the blind boy is also looking for his sister (Baby Farida), his friendship with crippled boy gets stronger each passing day.
These 2 roles were played superbly by newcomers and young lads Sudhir Kumar and Sushil Kumar. This film was also a debut film for Sanjay Khan brother of famous Feroz Khan. Film was also supported by Leela Mishra and Leela Chitnis. Lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
In those days only films with famous actors used to succeed at box office. Tarachand Barjatya really made a daring attempt to produce such an emotional film which did not have “Masala” like other successful films of the time. And yet, Film : Dosti became a huge hit. Besides for Best Music, Film Dosti won many more Filmfare awards for Best Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri, Best Song : “Chahunga Main Tujhe” (Raga : Pahadi), Best Movie Award and Best playback singer award for King of Melody “Mohd. Rafi” Saab.
When Rafi was told that he has to give playback to 2 young teen-aged boys, he was confused on how to match his rich voice to suite 2 young boys. With other heroes, he always knew how to modulate his voice to suit a particular hero say Dilip Kumar, Dev anand or Shammi Kapoor so as to be in sync with their style. So Rafi had to work very hard before rehearsals of Dosti Songs so as to match his voice match those 2 young boys. As we all can see, Rafi succeeded in his efforts and whenever we listen to any of Dosti songs picturized on those 2 young boys, it fits them very well as if they are singing themselves.
Although young actors Sushilkumar and Sudhir Kumar acted very well, they did not get any assignments after Dosti was released. It seems they did not have luck even after giving best performance in the Film : Dosti. Well! That is fate.
I doubt very much films like “Dosti” can be produced by today’s Bollywood although there are exceptions so that once in a while we do see emotional movie being produced with a social message such as Amir Khan’s “Taare Zameen Par” and very few other movies. But that Golden Era of 1950’s and 1960’s is gone. “Vo Zamana Ab Khatm Ho Chuka Hai”.

Author’s Note : This song is very difficult to play on Mouth Organ since the composition is such that many a times you fall short of breath. However, with God’s Grace, I managed to play.
Now look at the beautiful lyrics of this song “Jisne Sabko Racha, Apne Hi Roop Se, Uski Pehchaan Hoon, Main Tumhari Tarah” meaning we are all equal since all of us are created by same GOD. Whenever I listen to this song, tears roll down from my eyes. Same is true when I watch this movie. What a creation by Tarachand Barjatya!
Beautiful Lyrics of this song “Jaanewalon Zara, Mudke Dekho Mujhe”
Hat Off to the Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri for penning those soulful lyrics for the songs for the Film : Dosti
Jaanewalon Zara Mudke Dekho Mujhe
Ek Insaan Hoon, Main Tumhari Tarah
Jisne Sabka Racha, Apne Hi Roopse
Uski Pehchaan Hoon, Main Tumhari Tarah …..Jaanewalon Zara..
Is Anokhe Jagataki Main Taqdeer Hoon
Main Vidhata Ke Haathonki Tasveer Hoon
Ek Tasveer Hoon
Is Jahan Ke Liye, Dharati Maa Ke Liya
Shiv ka Vardaan Hoon, Main Tumhari Tarah…..Jaanewalon Zara..
Manke Andar Chhipaaye, Milanki Lagan
Apne Suraj Se Hoon, Ek Bichadi Kiran
Ek Bichadi Kiran
Phir Raha Hoon Bhatakata, Main Yahan Se Vahan
Aur Pareshan Hoon, Main Tumhari Tarah…..Jaanewalon Zara..
Mere Paas Avo Chodo Ye Saara Bharam
Jo Mera Dukh Vohi Hai Tumhara Bhi Gham
Hai Tumhara Bhi Gham
Dekhta Hoon Tumhe, Jaanata Hoon Tumhe
Laakh Anjaan Hoon, Main Tumhari Tarah….. Jaanewalon Zara..

Dear Gregory Fegel,
WELCOME TO MY BLOG! Thank you very much for your appreciation. Nice to meet you : another highly experienced Mouth Organ Player. Since you have been playing Mouth Organ for last 42 years, you must be very good at it. Why don't you post some of your Mouth Organ Tunes on Sulekha just like I did so that I can listen to your tunes.
It is nice to know that you can play Mouth Organ almost like a Shehnai. You are very versatile at Mouth Organ. Yes. You are far away from where I live and hence you cannot learn from me "Hindustani Classical". But I do not think I am an expert on "Hindustani Classical". Of course, I know few nuance of it.
Nice to know that you are now attempting to play "Hindustani Classical" on your Mouth Organ which is definitely a very difficult task considering limitations of Mouth Organ.
I wish you All the Best in your pursuit to learn Music.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Kamath

Dr. Narasinha Kamath Jee: Thank you so much for your wonderful post and the recordings of yourself playing mouth organ and also R.D. Burman playing mouth organ on the Dosti soundtrack.
I have myself been playing mouth organ for 42 years, on-and off, and during the past couple of years I have resumed playing with a great tenacity, -- playing now better than I ever have in my life before. I am very skilled at playing the mouth organ in the idioms of blues, rock, folk, and some types of jazz, and quite recently I began to experiment with playing Hindustani music on the mouth organ.
I have discovered that, since the mouth organ is a reed instrument, like the shenai, I can make my mouth organ sound just like a shenai -- if someone heard me play without seeing me play, they would probably guess that I was playing the shenai. Since the mouth organ has the ability to form simple chords, I can also make sounds which the shenai cannot produce.
If I lived anywhere near you in New York, instead of 3,000 miles away in Oregon, I might be seriously begging you to become my Hindustani music guru. Sincerely,
-- GF

Dear 'Dost' Nathan Saab,
What a Lovely Comment from you! You once again made my day. I am very happy to note that you liked my Mouth Organ Tune and also the blog on Film : Dosti. I think your Dad did not want you to see 'Sangam' for good reasons because it had some romantic stuff which he may have thought to be harmful to your minds like yours since you were too small at that time, I guess may be around 10 years old. Anyways, You can now buy a DVD of Film 'Dosti' and watch it and I am sure you will like it.
I saw 'Sanagam' with my friend at Apsara Talkies in 1964. At that time, I had just completed my B.E. (Mech) exams and hence my parents were so happy with me that they had no objection towards me for going fto any movie for that matter. If I remember it right, I think 'Sangam' was the first film released at Apsra Talkies. Yes. It had alovely archirecture in the front. But now Apsara Talkies is gone and shopping mall has come up in its place.
'Dosti' was also released at 'Surya' Talkies in Parel. But 'Surya' Talkies was not a good theatre (being in a bad locality) and that is why I guess, your Dad did not take you to 'Surya' Talkies. Now 'Surya' Talkies is also demolished and I guess a mall has been built in its place.
Thanks once again Nathan Saab for your soulful comment.
Aap Ka Sachha Dost,
Dr. Kamath

Wah Kamath Sir,
Great to listen your awesome rendition on mouth organ of song Janewala jara. Maza aagaya aapka bahut hi khubsurat pyara melodious mouth organ ke tune ko sunkar. You have played it excellently. It’s kept on soothing my ear and I played more than five times to listen your tune.
Dosti is very very touching movie. I soulfully appreciate those two guys who played their soulful role which was an ultimate acting, I would say. But very sad to know that later those too lovely artist were no more in this world what would have been the mystery behind God knows. All songs are great to listen all the time of film dosti. Specially Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta kyon and awaazmaine dunga is my most favorite of Rafi. You have brought an excellent blog by narrating so brilliantly the story of Dosti. I salute your depictions in this blog very well written and nice to read the compositions of this song and lyrics as you have explained the theme and meaning of this song too.
Hats off to you for your great work.
Regards,
Sablu Mukesh

You took me on a nostalgia of the year (1963) when Sangam and Woh Kaun Thi lost to equally well deserving music of young music director LP for Dosti! All the Rafi numbers were excellent . I learnt something new from your blog that RDB played mouth organ and 2 songs are based on the same Raag Pahaadi but they are yet so different and also the fine lyrics ..That shows the class those years.
What can I say about your mouth organ playing . It was so pleasant to hear that first thing in the morning. I always dont open your blog until the first thing in the morning to start the day hearing to your flute .This time it was mouth organ but it was as good.
Enjoyed this blog like all your other blogs Kamath Sir
Best Regards
Sivaram
