Dear Gregory Fegel,

WELCOME TO MY BLOG! Thank you very much for your appreciation. Nice to meet you : another highly experienced Mouth Organ Player. Since you have been playing Mouth Organ for last 42 years, you must be very good at it. Why don't you post some of your Mouth Organ Tunes on Sulekha just like I did so that I can listen to your tunes.

It is nice to know that you can play Mouth Organ almost like a Shehnai. You are very versatile at Mouth Organ. Yes. You are far away from where I live and hence you cannot learn from me "Hindustani Classical". But I do not think I am an expert on "Hindustani Classical". Of course, I know few nuance of it.

Nice to know that you are now attempting to play "Hindustani Classical" on your Mouth Organ which is definitely a very difficult task considering limitations of Mouth Organ.

I wish you All the Best in your pursuit to learn Music.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Kamath

Dr. Narasinha Kamath Jee: Thank you so much for your wonderful post and the recordings of yourself playing mouth organ and also R.D. Burman playing mouth organ on the Dosti soundtrack.
I have myself been playing mouth organ for 42 years, on-and off, and during the past couple of years I have resumed playing with a great tenacity, -- playing now better than I ever have in my life before. I am very skilled at playing the mouth organ in the idioms of blues, rock, folk, and some types of jazz, and quite recently I began to experiment with playing Hindustani music on the mouth organ.
I have discovered that, since the mouth organ is a reed instrument, like the shenai, I can make my mouth organ sound just like a shenai -- if someone heard me play without seeing me play, they would probably guess that I was playing the shenai. Since the mouth organ has the ability to form simple chords, I can also make sounds which the shenai cannot produce.
If I lived anywhere near you in New York, instead of 3,000 miles away in Oregon, I might be seriously begging you to become my Hindustani music guru. Sincerely,
        -- GF

Dear 'Dost' Nathan Saab,

What a Lovely Comment from you! You once again made my day. I am very happy to note that you liked my Mouth Organ Tune and also the blog on Film : Dosti. I think your Dad did not want you to see 'Sangam' for good reasons because it had some romantic stuff which he may have thought to be harmful to your minds like yours since you were too small at that time, I guess may be around 10 years old. Anyways, You can now buy a DVD of Film 'Dosti' and watch it and I am sure you will like it.

I saw 'Sanagam' with my friend at Apsara Talkies in 1964. At that time, I had just completed my B.E. (Mech) exams and hence my parents were so happy with me that they had no objection towards me for going fto any movie for that matter. If I remember it right, I think 'Sangam' was the first film released at Apsra Talkies. Yes. It had alovely archirecture in the front. But now Apsara Talkies is gone and shopping mall has come up in its place.

'Dosti' was also released at 'Surya' Talkies in Parel. But 'Surya' Talkies was not a good theatre (being in a bad locality) and that is why I guess, your Dad did not take you to 'Surya' Talkies. Now 'Surya' Talkies is also demolished and I guess a mall has been built in its place.

Thanks once again Nathan Saab for your soulful comment.

Dear Dr. Kamath Saab,

Aapne phir-se aapke sangeet-ki kala-se hamare dil-ko choo liye! It is a very moving song that you have chosen, and in the absence of lyrics, your mouth-organ had filled the gap and gave the same touching effect! Awesome rendition! Main apna sar jhukake aapko salaam karta hoon!

To be frank, I have'nt seen the film. I remember, when the film after a long successful jubilee run at Naaz theatre at Lamington Road was continuing for matinee show in the same theatre, I and my brother had pestered our dear Father to take us for this movie, as all our friends had already seen it! He agreed and took us all the way from Matunga to 'Naaz', but to our dismay, it was still 'House Full'! So Dad took us along a theatres-darshan around that area, particularly to see the newly opened 'Apsara' where 'Sangam' had been just screened! He 'misinformed' us that 'Sangam' is for 'Adults only' (so that we don't pester further!) and showed us just the theatre! I was fascinated by the curvaceous front of 'Apsara' (I mean the architecture of the front facade!), but still I had been disappointed that I missed to see 'Dosti'!

'Dosti' still became memorable to me through the many soul-stirring songs in the film that were constantly being aired in Vividh Bharati. The film was indeed a 'tour-de-force' of  the supreme combination of LP, Anand Bakshi & Rafi – 'Jaanewalon zara','Raahi manua','Koi jab raah na paaye',' Chahoonga main tujhe', 'Mera to job hi kadam hai'---All truly unforgettable songs! There was a sole sweet Lata number in the film which got overshadowed by Rafi's impressive line-up!
In one of my earlier blogs, I had attempted to pick the Best 8 Hindi 'Musical' films.  (http://svnathan.sulekha.com/blog/post/2007/04/the-super-8-count-down-of-the-best-hindi-film-musicals.htm, if you may like to re-visit). 'Dosti' was a natural choice in the list. Please let me re-produce what I had written about the film:

'LP’s music had been the hallmark of most of Prasad Productions’ block-busters like ‘Milan’, ‘Khilona, ‘Ek Duuje ke Liye’ etc. But the winning combination started with a humble B&W story of friendship between two physically challenged persons. The actors were unknown, but Rafi’s memorable songs touched the soul and lent ‘Dosti’ a special place in the history of Hindi film music. Dosti is at No.5.'
Thank you again Dr. Saab, for the wonderfully nostalgic post!
Always in 'Dosti',
S.V.Nathan.

Wah Kamath Sir,

Great to listen your awesome rendition on mouth organ of song Janewala jara. Maza aagaya aapka bahut hi khubsurat pyara melodious mouth organ ke tune ko sunkar. You have played it excellently. It’s kept on soothing my ear and I played more than five times to listen your tune.

Dosti is very very touching movie. I soulfully appreciate those two guys who played their soulful role which was an ultimate acting, I would say. But very sad to know that later those too lovely artist were no more in this world what would have been the mystery behind God knows. All songs are great to listen all the time of film dosti. Specially Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta kyon and awaaz maine dunga is my most favorite of Rafi. You have brought an excellent blog by narrating so brilliantly the story of Dosti. I salute your depictions in this blog very well written and nice to read the compositions of this song and lyrics as you have explained the theme and meaning of this song too.

Hats off to you for your great work.

Regards,

Sablu Mukesh

Dr Kamath

You took me on a nostalgia of the year (1963) when Sangam and Woh Kaun Thi lost to  equally well deserving music of  young music director LP  for Dosti! All the Rafi numbers were excellent . I learnt something new from your blog that RDB played mouth organ and 2 songs are based on the same Raag  Pahaadi but they are yet so different and also the fine lyrics ..That shows the class those years.
What can I say about your mouth organ playing . It was so pleasant to hear that  first thing in the morning. I always dont open your blog until the first thing in the morning to start the day  hearing to your flute .This time it was mouth organ but it was as good.

Enjoyed this blog like all your other blogs Kamath Sir

Best Regards

Sivaram
