This is a short Flute piece played by me while in "JUGALBANDI" with a Classical Tabla Player. Enjoy!
(Author's Note : Please CLICK above PLAY button to listen to a short classical piece played by me based on Raga Malkauns and is supported by a Classical Tabla Player of India Mr. Hemendra Mahavar who is currently accompanying Maestro Vocalist Suneel Mungee who is a desciple of Late Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki Jee).
It so happened that in 1995 a Classical tabla Player Mr. Hemendra Mahavar from Ahmedabad came to our Shirdi Saibaba Temple in Flushing, New York who was visiting USA along with Bhajan Singer Mr. Sharma. At that time (13 years ago) I had just started learning Flute. And Mr. Mahavar liked the way I played my Flute in Shirdi Saibaba Temple. Maybe Saibaba braught him to our Temple just for me.
Classical Tabla Player Mr. Mahavar then told me to play some classical piece and he said he will accompany me. It was Mr. Mahavar's Greatness and noble character that he agreed to accompany me on his Tabla where I was just a beginer on Flute and a hobbyist and not a professional then. Note that normally, in real world, a professional musician will refuse to play with a hobbyist. But Mr. Mahavar from Ahmedabad is a very humble young lad then of 27 years of age in 1995.
I am greatful to Mr. Mahavar for accompanying me 13 years ago. So I played a short piece on Raga Malkauns which is normally played on SHEHNAI at wedding ceremonies. But I tried Shehenai tune on my Flute. I hope you will enjoy my rendition and classical Tabla beats by Mr. Hemendra Mahavar.
Please give me your feedback through your comment which is very valuable to me.
Thanks and Regards,
Dr. Kamath

Mazaa aa gaya Guru-ji!
Shaadike tune flute-mein! Anyway I prefer the sound of flute to that of shehnaai, which at times can be annoying to the ears! To my ears, your playing didn't seem at all to be that of a beginner! Marvellous! Also great Tabla accompaniment by Mr. Mahavir! A Jugalbandi is always a treat to listen. It is more interesting to watch when the tabla player makes faces at his partner when playing furiously !
Regards,
S.V.Nathan.

Dear Dr. Bhagwath,
Thanks a Ton for your appreciative comment. I am glad to see you back commenting once again on my Blog. I can understand how much busy you must have been while visiting your Native Karnataka. I can imagine how nostalgic one gets while visiting Native Place which is similar to what I experience while visiting India from USA. Thanks for your detailed comment.
With Best Wishes to You and Your Family,
Kind Regards,
Dr. Kamath

Dear Sir,
Its been a LOO.......NG time from me as I was away on my annual vacation to coastal Karnataka and Bangalore. I shall be posting a photo blog soon on my trip.
Aapke performance ke baare main kyaan kahein - Hosh hi dia diya! Truly Sir, you are e remarkable artiste. Even though you said that this was way back in 1995 and that you were a beginer, no one who listens to this peice will say that it was rendered by a hobbyist. Of course, I am not versed in the nuances of classical music and might have overlooked any mistakes (if any) in your rendition, but that is secondary. I shall keep looking forward to more such jugalbandis in the future.

Dear Naval Langa Jee,
Thanks a billion for your wonderful response. Yes. Raga Malkauns does create sometimes effect of morning (maybe I should say right after 3 AM or early morning). I am delighted to know that you liked my Flute Jugalbandi with Classical Tabla Maestro Mr. Hemendra Mahavar.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Kamath

Lakshmi,
Thank you very much for your prompt appreciative response. Yes. Flute is softer in tone compared to Shehnai. Shehnai has a piercing sound and this is the reason at times Shehnai brings more "Pathos" than happy mood. I am very happy to know that you liked my rendition. Yes. Ghungoo sound in the background of this short classical piece braught back the effect of Kathak dance.

Dr. Kamath

To Dr. Narasinha Kamath jee,
The flute and shenai are such an instruments that, even if ther are heard at night, they create the effect of morning. And yes, here the arresting effect of raag Malkaus is also helping to make it morning-cenric. The jugalbandi is wonderfully effective.

With the sound of ghungroos (am i right?) also in the background, this brought a dance performance of a lissom kathak dancer to mind. The flute is lighter in tone than the shehnai to my ears and so creates a happier mood for me. To me the shehnai can sometimes be a little depressing
enjoyed yr rendering

Dear Dr Kamath

I absolutely love jugalbandis... esp that of sitar with shehnai and table with shehnai/any other instrument. I like so many combinations. The harmony and co ordination between the performers is amazing.
I liked the jugalbandi here too. Though I have no idea of the Ragas and all, I do enjoy such classical instrumental pieces. Do keep posting jugalbandis. It was amazing.
You keep surprising me with each piece of your music (vocal or instrumental). I am too lazy to get inspired ;)) I am happy to part of the audience :)))) Thanks and Regards.
